History sometimes advances because someone discovers an answer.

Just as often, it advances because someone asks a better question.

Field Notes is a collection of brief observations from the continuing History Had Eyes investigation - questions, curiosities, historical connections, research moments, and occasional conversations that give us something worth thinking about.

These are not intended to be comprehensive historical analyses. We reserve that deeper examination for our member Analysis feature and other research resources. Field Notes are deliberately different: short, accessible, thought-provoking, and open to everyone.

Sometimes a Field Note may begin with something discovered in an archive. Another might come from a viewer's question, a conversation, a photograph, an overlooked detail, or simply a thought that occurred while working on the documentary.

We may not always have an answer.

That's part of the point.

Our first entry, Field Note 001: “What If Martin Hutson Was Telling the Truth?”, begins with a question that sits at the heart of History Had Eyes. If Martin's extraordinary account were true, why didn't the world know about it?

Perhaps the difficulty of answering that question is precisely why it deserves to be asked.
