Through royal correspondence, wartime diplomacy, political cartoons, and archival records, this episode explores why offering sanctuary to the Romanovs became increasingly difficult and why the official account of their deaths ultimately served the interests of multiple governments.

Drawing on the research presented in Rescuing Nicholas, we also examine an alternative question: if Nicholas survived under Allied protection, did secrecy become a political necessity? Would acknowledging such a rescue have threatened fragile monarchies, complicated postwar diplomacy, or intensified the Russian Civil War?

More than a century later, important royal archives remain sealed, and questions surrounding the fate of the Romanovs continue to spark debate.
